Can I Eat While Reading the Quran?

Eating while reading the Quran has been discussed among scholars, and there are varying opinions on this matter. Here are some perspectives from different scholars:

For more like this, take a look at our our guides.

Opinion 1: Prohibition of eating while reading the Quran

Some scholars argue that one should give their full attention and focus to the words of Allah without any distractions. They base their opinion on showing reverence and respect for the Holy Quran. Sheikh Walid bin Rashid Al-Saeedan says: “What is meant when reading the Quran is not just reading its words but that the heart reads it with contemplation and prudence. When a person reads the Quran, he should avoid distractions that distract his heart and mind from pondering and contemplating the words of Allah. Therefore, a person should not read the Quran while still eating and drinking because his heart will be preoccupied. The more the heart is devoted to contemplation, the greater its desire to benefit from the words of Allah. On the other hand, someone directed a question to Sheikh Ibn Uthaymeen, may God have mercy on him: A man was seen reading the Quran with chewing gum in his mouth, so what is the ruling on that? He replied by saying: I do not think that he evaluates the letters while eating gum because the exits of the letters will be occupied with gum, and it is known that it is not permissible for a person to read the Quran unless showing his letters according to his ability, so if he wants to read the Quran, let him leave the gum.

Opinion 2: Permissibility with conditions

Other scholars take a more lenient view and permit eating while reading the Quran under certain conditions. They argue that it is permissible to eat while reading as long as one maintains the proper etiquette and respect for the Quran. Sheikh Saleh Al-Fawzan says: “It is permissible to eat and drink while reading the Quran, but it is preferable for the reciter of the Quran to devote himself to reciting the Quran and not get distracted by anything else. Sheikh Othman Al-Khamees says: “There is nothing wrong with the ruling on eating and drinking while reading the Quran, yet it is better to leave that to devote yourself to reading and contemplating. Especially if you are reading for a long time, you can eat and drink while reading. But do not read while the food is in your mouth. You can continue reading after swallowing food.” However, It’s important to note that reading the Quran is accompanied by a sense of devotion and focus. Whereas there is no explicit prohibition against eating while reading the Quran, it is generally recommended to maintain a certain level of etiquette and show respect when engaging with the holy book. It is essential to approach the Quran with appreciation and humility, focusing on understanding and internalizing its teachings. The primary concern when eating while reading the Quran is the potential for distraction or lack of concentration. Eating can divert attention and hinder the ability to connect with the words of the Quran.  Moreover, eating involves physical actions such as chewing, swallowing, and handling food, which may not be considered suitable during the recitation or study of the Holy Quran. Regardless, there may be situations where eating while reading the Quran is allowable or even necessary. For example, if someone is engaged in a lengthy recitation or studying session that coincides with a mealtime, they may choose to eat while continuing their reading. In such cases, it is advisable to exercise caution and ensure that eating does not compromise the respect and attention given to the Quran.

Can I Listen To Quran While Eating?

However, it is not necessarily prohibited if you are listening to a recitation of the Quran in the background through an audio device or radio and you are eating. Just try to maintain reverence and mindfulness towards the Quranic recitation. Can I Drink While Reading the Quran?

Distinguishing active recitation from passive listening

An important practical distinction exists between actively reciting the Quran oneself while eating, which most scholars discourage due to the divided attention and potential disrespect involved, and passively listening to Quranic audio playing in the background during a meal, which many scholars view more permissively. This distinction reflects the difference between direct personal engagement with the sacred text, requiring focus and reverence, and simply having recitation present in one’s environment without actively performing the recitation oneself. Understanding this nuance helps clarify why many households comfortably play Quranic recitation during meals without this being considered equivalent to a person personally reciting while chewing food.

Cultural practices versus established religious rulings

Various cultural traditions have developed their own customs regarding Quran recitation during meals, some more permissive and others more restrictive, which can create confusion about what is actually religiously required versus what reflects regional custom. Distinguishing between genuine scholarly rulings, generally cautioning against active recitation while eating, and cultural practices that may add additional restrictions or permissions not directly rooted in religious texts, helps believers navigate this topic with greater clarity. Consulting knowledgeable scholars familiar with authentic sources, rather than relying solely on inherited family or regional customs, provides the most reliable guidance on this question.

Practical guidance for families and shared meals

  • Consider playing Quranic audio recitation in the background during family meals rather than reciting personally while eating.
  • Reserve personal, active recitation for times when you can give it full attention and appropriate respect.
  • Teach children the reasoning behind this guidance, helping them understand respect for the Quran rather than presenting it as an arbitrary rule.
  • Consult a knowledgeable scholar if your specific cultural tradition differs from general scholarly guidance on this matter.
