Ayatul kursi is the greatest verse in the Quran. It’s the 255 verse in surah Al Baqarah which Allah revealed to the Messenger of Allah (SAW). Ayatul Kursi includes monotheism, Allah’s names, attributes, and power.

Reciting Ayatul Kursi has several virtues for the believers such as saving from the devils and helping the possessed to heal from envy, evil eye, Jinn, and magic. (Read: Benefits of Ayatul Kursi.)

What is Ayatul Kursi?

Ayatul Kusri is a Madani verse, which Allah revealed to prophet Muhammed (SAW) in Madina after he immigrated from Makkah.

Ayatul Kusri is located in Surah Baqarah, it’s the 255th verse. It’s one of the longest verses in the Quran.

The word “kursi” means the throne of a chair as the verse symbolizes divinity. It started with Allah’s word and ended with two of his names which are: “the highest and the greatest”.

Ayatul Kusri consists of 50 words and includes the names and actions of Allah as it focuses on monotheism.

When Allah revealed Ayatul Kusri to the prophet Muhammed (PBUH) he asked Zaid bin Thabit (RA) to write it down. The Messenger of Allah recommended reading this verse in his sayings.

The Meaning of Ayatul Kursi, Transliteration, and Translation

{Allah! There is no god ˹worthy of worship˺ except Him, the Ever-Living, All-Sustaining}

The first section of the ayatul kursi includes two of Allah’s names: “ever-living” and “all-sustaining”.

The verse started by confirming monotheism and proving that Allah never slumbers or sleeps.

{To Him belongs whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on the earth}

                                                          (لَّهُۥ مَا فِى ٱلسَّمَـٰوَٰتِ وَمَا فِى ٱلْأَرْضِ ۗ)

The second part of the verse clarifies that Allah is the owner of this universe which includes whatever is in the heavens and the earth.

{Who could intercede with Him without His permission?}

The third part points to no one on earth can get intercession without Allah’s permission as the disbelievers thought they would get intercession from their idols.

{He ˹fully˺ knows what is ahead of them and what is behind them, but no one can grasp any of His knowledge—except what He wills to reveal}

This part refers to Allah only knowing everything in life and the hereafter and no one knows what Allah acknowledges.

{His Seat encompasses the heavens and the earth, and the preservation of both does not tire Him}

Interpreters disagreed in explaining “his seat”. Some explained it as the seat under Allah’s throne, and others clarified that his seat means his knowledge.

{and the preservation of both does not tire Him. For He is the Highest, the Greatest}

The last part of the verse means that saving the heavens and the earth and between them doesn’t tire Allah.
