Muzammil means “the one covered in garments” and the literal translation of Al-Muzammil is “The Enshrouded one.” The Arabic origin of the root word is “zammil” and that means “to wrap or cover oneself.”
It connotes being protected and covered with spiritual guidance. It has been traced as a reference to the practice of prophet Muhammed PBUH of covering himself in a cloak as he prayed through the night. Moreover, it also acts as the perfect title. As you read, you’ll come to understand why.
Surah al-muzammil calls upon the prophet and other Muslims to pray and worship Allah (the one and only God) at night, preferably by the last third of the night as prophet Dawud/David PBUH had done which is around 2 to 3 hours before Fajr (Dawn) prayer and is called a night prayer (Qiyam al-layl) which was mandatory for the prophet, but optional and sunnah (done to follow the example of the prophet) for believers to acquire protection and guidance from Allah.
The surah also calls upon the prophet and Muslims to recite the quran at the last third of the night because it is believed to be the time Allah descends from the heavens to call upon the repentent so that he would forgive their sins and shortcomings. The surah also calls upon patience with the disbelievers.
