Maqamat Quran Course

You already know your Tajweed. You know where each letter comes from and how long each Madd should be. Still, your Quran recitation may sound flat. You may also wonder how the great reciters shape their voice. The Quran House Maqamat Quran Course helps you take that next step.

This Quran maqamat course teaches the recitation skills that come after Tajweed. You learn maqamat step by step, starting with the eight main ones. You learn to use your whole voice, from low to high. It is also a Mujawwad recitation course, so you practice the slow Mujawwad style. Classes are one-to-one and online, so they fit around work and family.

About the Maqamat Quran Course

The Maqamat Quran Course at Quran House is a one-to-one online Quran recitation course. It is for learners who can already read with Tajweed. We skip the basics you know. We work on four recitation skills: tune, breath, voice control, and style.

Maqamat are the tunes that great Quran reciters use. Each maqam has its own mood. Bayati feels warm and calm. Saba feels soft and sad. Hijaz feels deep, like a heart that longs for Allah. When you learn maqamat, the meaning of each verse starts to guide your voice.

When you learn maqamat with a strong Tajweed base, the hardest part is keeping the rules right while the tune moves. A long Madd must keep its full count, even as your voice climbs. A Ghunnah must stay at two counts, even when the tune pulls for more. This Mujawwad recitation course trains you to hold both at once.

Connected curriculum

Quran Recitation Skills You Will Study in the Maqamat Quran Course

This maqamat Quran course picks up where your Tajweed classes ended. You will not spend time on rules you already know. Instead, you put those rules to work inside a tune. The lessons below build on each other, one recitation skill at a time.

  1. Keep Your Tajweed Right Inside a Tune

In a maqam, your voice goes up and down. Still, the length of each letter must stay the same. You learn to move the tune with your pitch, and never with extra length. A two-count Madd stays two-counts, even in the middle of a long line.

A tune can hide small mistakes. Your teacher listens for them. The teacher hears when a Qalqalah fades, or when a Ghunnah runs long. They also hear when a heavy letter turns light on a high note.

  2. Find Your Low, High, and Highest Notes

Great reciters use three levels of voice. The low, calm base is called Qarar. The higher level is Jawab. The top level is Jawab al-Jawab. A Mujawwad recitation often starts low and climbs one step at a time.

You find these three levels in your own voice. Many reciters go high too soon and then run out of room. You learn to save your top note for the verse that needs it most.

  3. Plan Your Breath and Your Stops

Mujawwad lines are long, so each breath needs a plan. You learn to breathe from your belly and let the air out slowly, so it lasts.

You already know the stop signs in the Mushaf. Now you use them as a tool. You pick where to stop so the meaning stays clear and your breath lasts to the end of the tune.

  4. Start With Maqam Bayati, the Home Tune

Bayati is the home tune of Quran recitation. Many reciters begin and end with it. You first learn Bayati at your low level. Then you take it higher.

You also learn Bayati Shuri, a close cousin of Bayati. It adds a new color to the same mood, so your voice does not sound flat.

  5. Use Saba and Hijaz for Mercy, Warning, and Du'a

Saba is soft and full of sorrow. Reciters use it for verses about the grave and the Last Day. Hijaz is deep and moving. It fits verses of du'a and the stories of the prophets.

You practice both on real verses. Your teacher shows you why a reciter picks one tune over the other.

  6. Add Rast, Nahawand, Sikah, Ajam, and Kurd

Rast sounds strong and steady. It fits verses about Allah's power. Nahawand is gentle and warm. Sikah feels slow and thoughtful. Ajam sounds bright and happy. Kurd is soft and tender.

With these five, you have all eight main maqamat. You now have a tune to match almost any verse.

  7. Move From One Maqam to the Next

Great reciters rarely stay in one tune for long. They change when the meaning changes. A new story might bring a new maqam. So might a turn from mercy to warning.

You learn to make each change smooth, so it never feels sudden. At the end, you learn to bring your voice back home to Bayati, like the great reciters do.

  8. Learn From the Great Reciters, Then Find Your Own Voice

You study short passages from Mujawwad masters. These include Sheikh Mustafa Ismail, Sheikh Abdul Basit, and Sheikh Al-Minshawi. You listen to each line and copy what they do.

Copying is only the first step. After that, your teacher helps you shape a style that suits your own voice.

What You Gain from the Maqamat Quran Course

In this Mujawwad recitation course, you will hear the change in your voice early on. Your Quran recitation will feel fuller and more in control. You keep the Tajweed you worked so hard for. You also add beauty and feeling to it.

How a class runs

What a 30-Minute Maqamat Quran Course Class Looks Like

Every session follows the same clear rhythm, so learners always know what comes next.

Warm Up Your Voice

You start with a few breaths. Then you slide from your low note to your high note. This wakes up your voice and shows your teacher how it sounds today.

Recite Last Week's Passage

You recite what you practiced since your last class. Your teacher checks the maqam. They also check the Tajweed under it.

Learn a New Tune or Change

Your teacher recites a new passage or a new change between maqamat. You listen first. Then you repeat it, one line at a time, until it feels easy.

Recite on Your Own and Get Notes

You recite the new part by yourself. Your teacher gives you short, clear notes. Then they set a small passage for you to practice before next class.

After every class

Recite a Full Passage in Mujawwad Style, From Opening to Close

By the end of this Mujawwad recitation course, you can recite a full passage in Mujawwad style. You open in Bayati and climb through your voice levels. You change maqam as the meaning changes, then close back in Bayati. Your Tajweed stays right from start to end.

Why Quran House

Why Learners Pick the Maqamat Quran Course at Quran House

A Teacher Who Guards Your Tajweed

Even skilled reciters slip. Some stretch a short Madd past two counts to finish a tune. Others add extra hum to a Ghunnah. Your teacher catches this right away.

You do not sit through lessons you already know. Your class starts from where your voice is today. If Saba needs more time, you take more time. If Hijaz comes easily, you move on.

Room to Use Your Full Voice

A tune needs your full voice. In a one-to-one class, there is no group listening in. You can try high notes and new maqamat without feeling shy. Your mistakes stay between you and your teacher.

Learn From Home

You do not need to travel to find a maqamat teacher. All classes are online. You only need a quiet room and a good internet connection.

Class Times That Fit Your Week

You pick the times that suit you. Early morning and late evening both work. Short 30-minute classes make it easy to keep going, even in a busy week.

I had been to a lot of Quran classes before, but they just weren't a good fit for me until I found this Quran Academy, which turned out to be the best one I could ever ask for. FAQs

FAQs

Practical answers before you book the first class.

Who Is The Maqamat Quran Course For?

The Maqamat Quran Course is for anyone who already reads the Quran with Tajweed. It helps you learn maqamat and recite in Mujawwad style with full voice control.

Is This Maqamat Quran Course For Tajweed Beginners?

No. You should already know the main Tajweed rules. If you are still learning them, it is best to finish a Tajweed course first.

Is It Allowed To Recite The Quran With Maqamat?

The Prophet ﷺ said, "Beautify the Quran with your voices" (Abu Dawud). Scholars praise a lovely voice when the Tajweed stays right. That is why this course always puts Tajweed first.

Will Learning Maqamat Hurt My Tajweed?

No, not when it is taught well. In this course, Tajweed always comes first. The tune moves with your pitch and never adds length to a letter.

What Is The Difference Between Murattal And Mujawwad?

Murattal is a calm, even style. People use it for daily reading and Hifz review. Mujawwad is slower. It uses more tune and moves more between low and high notes.

What Are Qarar And Jawab?

Qarar is the low, calm base of your voice. Jawab is the higher level above it. A Mujawwad recitation often starts in Qarar and rises to Jawab for key verses.

Which Maqamat Will I Learn?

You will learn the eight main maqamat. These are Bayati, Saba, Hijaz, Rast, Nahawand, Sikah, Ajam, and Kurd. You will also learn how to move between them.

Do I Need A Good Voice To Learn Maqamat?

No. Most people think their voice is not good enough when they start. Breath and voice training help any voice sound clearer and more steady.

How Long Does It Take To Learn Maqamat?

It depends on your voice and how often you practice. It also depends on how many classes you take a week. Your teacher will make a plan that fits your goals.

Is There A Free Trial For The Mujawwad Recitation Course?

Yes. You can book a free trial with Quran House. Meet your teacher and recite for them. Then decide if the course is right for you.
