Eight Tajweed Topics Non-Arabic Speakers Study at Quran House

The course is organized into eight clear topics, each building on the last.

  1. Makharij and Arabic Letter Articulation Points

The six high-impact letters — Ayn (ع), Haa (ح), Khaa (خ), Qaaf (ق), Saad (ص), and Dhaad (ض) — receive focused drilling because English speakers most commonly substitute or flatten these sounds, altering Quranic meaning.

  2. Heavy and Light Letters Across the Quran

Tutors train students to distinguish heavy letters — Khaa (خ), Saad (ص), Dhaad (ض), Ghayn (غ), Taa (ط), Qaaf (ق), Dhaa (ظ) — from light letters through a mouth-feel approach. When the back of the tongue rises toward the roof of the mouth and the mouth fills with sound, the letter is heavy; when the mouth stays relaxed, it is light.

  3. Noon Sakinah and Tanween Rules

Students master all four rules governing Noon Sakinah and Tanween: Izhar (clear pronunciation before throat letters), Idgham (merging into the next letter), Iqlab (conversion to a nasal Meem before Baa), and Ikhfa (hidden nasal sound held for two counts before the remaining fifteen letters).

  4. Meem Sakinah and Its Three Applications

When Meem carries Sukoon, three distinct rules apply. Ikhfa Shafawi hides Meem before Baa with a nasal hold. Idgham Shafawi merges two Meems into one strengthened sound. Izhar Shafawi requires a fully clear Meem before all remaining letters.

  5. Madd Elongation Rules: Madd Asli and Madd Arid Lis-Sukun

Students learn the two foundational Madd rules. Madd Asli stretches Fatha-Alif, Kasra-Ya, and Damma-Waw combinations for exactly two counts. Madd Arid Lis-Sukun applies when stopping on a word where a long vowel is followed by a final letter; the stretch may extend to two, four, or six counts, with the chosen length kept consistent throughout the recitation.

  6. Qalqalah Echo Sound on Five Letters

The five Qalqalah letters — Qaaf (ق), Taa (ط), Baa (ب), Jeem (ج), Daal (د) — produce a brief controlled bounce when they carry Sukoon. Quran House tutors train the light echo at the middle of a word and the stronger echo when stopping at a word's end, without adding a full vowel.

  7. Ghunnah and Shaddah: Nasal Sounds and Doubled Letters

Ghunnah training focuses on Noon with Shaddah and Meem with Shaddah, holding each nasal sound through the nose for two steady counts. Shaddah study teaches students to double the letter — first with Sukoon then with a vowel — pressing firmly without rushing the sound.

  8. Waqf Stopping and Pause Signs

Tutors also train the correct stopping adjustments — dropping Tanween Dammah and Kasrah, turning Tanween Fathah into a long Alif sound, and calming short vowels — so recitation stops cleanly without altering the word’s sound or meaning.

Course outcomes

Skills Non-Arabic Speakers Achieve Through Quran House Tajweed

Students completing basic Tajweed for non-Arabic speakers at Quran House leave with four concrete, verifiable recitation skills.

Accurate Pronunciation of All Arabic Letters

Students correctly produce all Arabic letters from their proper Makharij, including the six high-impact letters most commonly mispronounced by English speakers. Pronunciation errors that alter Quranic meaning are identified, corrected, and eliminated through tutor-led repetition drills.

Correct Application of Noon and Meem Rules

Students apply all four Noon Sakinah rules and all three Meem Sakinah rules accurately during live recitation, holding nasal sounds for the correct count and merging or clearing sounds according to which letter follows.

Consistent Madd Elongation Across Recitation

Students maintain steady, accurate Madd counts — two counts for Madd Asli and the chosen extended count when stopping — without shortening or over-stretching. Even vowel length is verified by the tutor during every session using direct listening and correction.

Reading Mushaf Stop Signs Without Hesitation

Students recognize the essential Waqf markers and stop, pause, or continue accurately at each sign. Word endings are adjusted correctly — Tanween removed, short vowels calmed — so recitation flows cleanly through full verses of the Quran without hesitation at stopping points.

How a class runs

How a Single Tajweed Session Runs at Quran House

Every session follows the same clear rhythm, so learners always know what comes next.

Reviewing the Previous Session’s Recitation (about 5 minutes)

The student recites assigned verses while the tutor notes what is now accurate and what still needs correction. In the first session, the tutor assesses the student’s current level instead.

Introducing and Drilling the New Tajweed Rule (about 8 minutes)

The tutor demonstrates the rule, then the student repeats it across letters, words, or three to five Quranic verses, depending on level, until pronunciation is consistent.

Applying the Rule Inside Full Quranic Verses

The student recites complete verses in context while the tutor corrects any regression to old pronunciation habits.

Setting the Practice Assignment for Next Session

The tutor assigns specific verses targeting only the rule covered that day for focused independent practice.

After every class

Students Leave Each Session With One Corrected Rule

Every class ends with one Tajweed rule drilled in isolation, applied in real verses, and assigned for independent practice before the next session.
