1- Submit to Allah’s Control!

Allah has absolute and supreme control over all things and governs all. Be it an army of 60,000 men or an army of elephants, Allah’s will of ‘be’ tops all might, numbers, and force. All ultimately bow down to Allah’s will and command. Surah al-fil plays as a reminder of such supremacy, governance, and limitless capabilities that are beyond imagination. It calls for submission to Allah’s will and authority.

2- Have Faith!

The people of Mecca sought refuge in the mountains at the time of adversary, trusting no harm would come to the Kaaba as they trusted in Allah’s protection and had faith Allah would save them from Abraha’s army and would not let the Kaaba be destroyed. This serves as a reminder to turn to Allah in times of need and trust Allah’s wisdom and protection.

3- The Kaaba!

The Kaaba is considered a sacred place in Islam as a house of worship and a destination of pilgrimage. This is highlighted in Allah’s causes when Abraha, the ruler of Yemen at the time, attempts to destroy the Kaaba with an army of 60,000 men and elephants and is met with flocks of birds raining havoc with rocks of hard clay from hell upon the army.

4- Stand Against oppression!

The tale stands as a cautionary tale and reminder to not oppress or harm others, unjustly as Allah is a witness of our actions. Oppressors are warned of Abraha and his army’s inevitable fate that yielded them unfruitfully and drew divine wrath upon them.

5- Be Humble & Grateful!

It serves as a reminder to stay humbled and grateful no matter how advanced and powerful a civilization perceives itself, it will forever remain dependent on Allah. This fosters humanity’s crucial reliance on the creator and reminds us to be grateful for the blessings that surround us.

6- Find Shelter in Allah & Win!

Regardless of the odds, be it 60,000 men with elephants or a group of people who would mock you, do not be afraid and seek shelter in Allah because Allah is the ultimate protector. Those who seek refuge in him regardless of the challenges they are faced with, will come out victorious, inshallah, and win their battles.

The Context of Surah Al-Fil

Let us go over the surah al-fil story in English. The surah narrated the story of the ruler of Yemen, Abraha, who was jealous and displeased with how the pilgrimage to his cathedral in Yemen was performed in comparison to the Kaaba in Mecca. Abraha sent an army on the backs of elephants to demolish the Kaaba in Mecca.

This historical event happened in the year of the Elephant before the prophet Muhammad PBUH started spreading the message of Allah. The army was marched in 570 CE and the Meccans took refuge in the mountains. The elephants grew nervous and uncomfortable upon realizing what they were being commanded to do but still obeyed and marched the attack in obedience.

Then, a miraculous intervention took place as Abraha drew nearer to Mecca. Allah safeguarded the Kaaba and sent flocks of birds carrying rocks from hell that are hard clay to rain upon Abraha’s army and wreak havoc till even the mightiest elephant was melted down as eaten straw.
