What is Surah Alam Nashrah?
Surah Alam Nsharah is called in the Quran “Ash-Sharh”. It’s a short surah that is comprised of eight verses.
Moreover, it’s a Makki surah that is sent down in Makka. Allah revealed it after surah Ad-Duhaa and before surah Al-Asr.
Al Sharh means the expansion, the expanding, relief, and consolation.
Surah alam nashrah is one of the shortest surahs Allah revealed before the messenger’s (SAW) immigration, at the beginning of his prophetic mission.
It’s one of the surahs that supported him against his hardships while calling his people to Islam.

Reading each letter in the Quran equals 10 rewards. Prophet Muhammed (PBUH) said:
“Whoever recites a letter from the Book of Allah, he will receive one good deed as ten good deeds like it. I do not say that Alif Lam Mim is one letter, but rather Alif is a letter, Lam is a letter, and Mim is a letter.”
2. Brings reassurance
Reciting any surah of the Quran means remembering Allah, which makes the reciter reassured.
{those who believe and whose hearts find comfort in the remembrance of Allah. Surely in the remembrance of Allah do hearts find comfort.} (Ar-Ra’ad 13:28).
Moreover, the general benefits are:
- Becoming close to Allah.
- The Quran will become an intercessor for the reciter on Judgement Day.
- Gaining a higher rank in life and the hereafter.
- Strengthening faith.
- Guiding the reciter to the straight path.
Lessons from Surah Al Sharh
There are many lessons learned from Surah Al Sharh:
1. Blessing of opening up the chest
This surah demonstrates that Allah gave prophet Muhammed (PBUH) the blessing and miracle of opening up his chest to qualify him to receive the prophethood. {Have We not uplifted your heart for you ˹O Prophet˺} (Ash-Sharh 94:1).
2. Ease comes after hardship
The surah reassures prophet Muhammed (PBUH) that hardships don’t stay forever, and inevitably, ease comes after them {So, surely with hardship comes ease} (Ash-Sharh 94:5).
3. Devoting time for worship
The importance of worship is one of the lessons of this surah, as Allah (SWT) commanded his messenger to devote his time to worship after he finished his duty. {So once you have fulfilled ˹your duty˺, strive ˹in devotion˺} (Ash-Sharh 94:7).
4. Raising the position of the messenger
The surah shows another blessing which is raising the statue of the prophet Muhammed (PBUH).
We can note this blessing while hearing the name comes after Allah’s name in the Shahada and Adhan {and elevated your renown for you?} (Ash-Sharh 94:4).
The Reasons for Surah Alam Nashrah’s Revelation
The disbelievers of Quraysh mocked Muslims’ poverty, so Allah revealed this surah to relieve Muslims’ grief.
Another reason for revelating this surah is to remind prophet Muhammed (PBUH) of the blessings he got, which are opening up his chest to purify his heart, and giving him help and support with his prophetic mission.
