There are two types of Tajweed:

  • Theoritical Tajweed.
  • Practical Tajweed.

As for theoretical Tajweed, it is a very simple and straightforward science, learning theoretical Tajweed is easy. It might take around 3 hours of online Tajweed classes or slightly less or more to finish studying all Tajweed theoretical rules. Of course, there will be slight differences depending on the teaching and the students.

However, the real challenge is practical Tajweed. After all, the whole reason as to why study Tajweed is to improve and beautify our Quran recitation.

It takes sometimes perhaps weeks or months in order for a student to adjust his pronunciation and apply Tajweed rules while reading the Quran.

We could say that a person who has truly studied Tajweed is the one who can recite the Quran beautifully while applying Tajweed rules, he is the one who has studied Tajweed.

And there are couple of things that could help a Muslim improve his recitation of the Quran:

  • Listening to the Quran recitation. Alhamdulillah, there are many websites and services today that makes it easy for Muslims to listen to the Quran recitation, with some even giving tips regarding the pronunciation, meanings, Tajweed. Listening to the Quran then trying to copy the reciter is one of the best tactics.
  • Registering for a Quran and Tajweed class. Your Quran teacher will teach you theoretical rules one-by-one then help you apply them in your recitation, practice and he will correct you if you made any mistakes.
  • Reading the Quran regularly. Practice makes perfect in everything. Your tongue is a muscle, and you need to train to move in the way that makes you read the pure Arabic Quran beautifully and clearly with Tajweed rules applied. Reading with your teacher in class is great, however, if you want to learn Tajweed faster, you need to read the Quran regularly and on your own in addition.
  • Consistency: You need to be consistent, even if you are going to read a small portion from the Quran every day, but make it consistent. The difference will be huge.
